Surfers Paradise and Coffs Harbour

Luke has been trying to blog for a few days now but his phone has been refusing to publish the posts, so this is a little delayed but there you go.

So the day after MovieWorld was spent having our first lie-in. Not the whole day of course but a lot of it. It was after midday when we left the room (oops). We thought we'd go somewhere nice for brunch and Mark (Luke's dad) recommended a cafe close to our hotel. We walked there but there was a sign saying the kitchen was closed, so we walked across the esplanade to see what we could find. We stumbled upon a cute little cafe with a $12 lunch menu. Perfect. That's around £6-7, and there were so many options. Luke opted for fish and chips while I chose a chicken and avocado sandwich. Luke paid $8.50 for a rekorderlig but it was so tasty and cold I wish I'd done the same but I just had orange juice (to make it feel more like brunch than lunch).

After brunch we picked a nice spot on the beach. It was the softest sand EVER (other than Whitehaven of course) and the beach was gorgeous. We laid out our towels and basked in the sun. I finally realised how embarrassing it's going to be when I get home after being away for so long with no tan at all so this was my tan attempt. I fell asleep whilst sunbathing and woke up to find no Luke laying beside me. After panicking I realised he was down by the sea kicking a football round with some other guys (yes, Luke actually socialised with people other than me, I know, I was shocked too). As the sun was setting we walked back to the hotel where we had a quick dip in the (freezing) pool, before eating dinner in the room (soup and toast- nothing exciting) and going to bed.

The following morning we got up early to leave enough time to get a taxi to the bus station. We left the room and were in reception ready to check out, but there was a huge family checking out in front of us, and two old men speaking to the one receptionist and taking AGES. So I stood in the 'queue' for fifteen minutes. We had to call our own taxi because there wouldn't have been enough time to get to the bus station if we had waited for the receptionist to call us one. So we were both panicking in a mad rush to get to the station on time but (THANK GOD) we made it. Aus is good for taxis because there's one number you can call from anywhere in the country and get a taxi, and we've dialled it enough times we both know it off by heart.

We arrived at Coffs Harbour after a seven hour journey and got a taxi to our motel, the Big Windmill. We checked in and were pleasantly surprised by the room as there were mixed reviews on tripadvisor. It was a pretty big room with a small bathroom, a good shower, big comfy bed, fridge and most importantly a kettle with tea and coffee making facilities. We got fresh milk from reception on arrival and there was even a little packet of shortbread in the room which was a lovely touch!

We were so tired from the bus journey, so we just showered and watched TV in bed. We couldn't even be bothered to go out for food and Dominos is so cheap out here it just had to be done! Two large pizzas, garlic bread, a bottle of coke, fries and a chocolate lava cake- $40. That's like £20. That's a tenner each. I know.

So we feasted and then slept. In the morning we checked out, but our bus to Sydney wasn't until midnight, so we asked for our bags to be stored at reception. They said it was fine for us to still use the facilities so we sat by the pool. Another (failed) attempt at getting a decent tan. There was also a fussball table by the pool so we had a few games. We then went to the onsite restaurant, which is actually in the ground floor of the windmill. It's a German restaurant called Edelweiss. I chose a ceaser salad, with strawberry sparkling wine (it was fairly cheap for a glass so I treated myself), and Luke chose the pork knuckle. We also had dessert, brownie for me and apple strudel for Luke. The brownie was absolutely HUGE and I had to ask Luke to help me out. Overall we had a lovely lunch there, and a German lady who I presume was the owner came to clear our table after dessert and she was very friendly and nice, asking about our trip and our time in Australia.

We went back to sit by the pool and a lady who I think is the manager of the hotel came over and asked us if we were waiting for a late bus at a silly time. We told her yes we were, and she said she was happy to give us a key to a dirty room so we can put our bags in there until we leave, and we can watch tv and shower. We were so happy beause it meant we didn't have to hang around outside until a silly time so we were very grateful for her kindness! We made the most of it by going for showers and watching two films before leaving to catch the bus to Sydney.
